The Story Of

Allyn Rose

Breast Cancer Advocate, Motivational Speaker

"My dad [said to my mother], 'your other breast is a ticking time bomb. Let’s get rid of it. I don’t care what you look like. I want you to be around for the next 50 years.' My mom didn’t do it because to her, being a woman meant having breasts, and my mom wanted to be a woman... So why would a woman who lost her own mother and her aunt to breast cancer, faced a battle with breast cancer before, would choose to keep her breast? It is because of how my mom defined herself."

Her Story

Some may have seen Allyn Rose on TV from the Miss America beauty pageant, but the American beauty has more than just her good looks - she is well-equipped with knowledge, bravery and a big heart. More people may know Allyn for her breast cancer advocacy, and her forward-thinking medical choice in similar fashion as Angelina Jolie’s: she underwent a preventive mastectomy after losing her mother, aunt and grandmother to breast cancer. Her decision is bigger than herself - it is also about disrupting the male-oriented perspective of the female breast.

Her Lesson From Her Genes

Like mother, like daughter, Allyn’s mother was a high-achieving scholar with athletic talents. Yet, while she was at the top of the world at the age of 27, she was first diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a single mastectomy. Her concern was not her health or longevity, but her chances of requiting a relationship with one breast. Despite it being a ticking bomb, Allyn’s mother reserved it for the sake of “being a woman”. Years later, when Allyn turned 14, her mother did not survive the second cancer attack and left the duty of raising her daughter behind.

Her Message

To avoid undergoing the pain her mother and the women in her family went through, it was her father who suggested doing a mastectomy to Allyn. The beauty bravely overcame the dilemma and chose health over the stigmatised standards of beauty. Today, she proves that she has made the right choice by living both gracefully and healthily. The self-made advocate now preaches passionately on women’s health and ignites the important conversations of the female body wherever she goes.
